Textiles & The Fashion Industries Impact On Our Bodies & The Earth

*what I’ve learned about textiles & the fashion industry & how it impacts our bodies & the earth ; facts from the book Killer Clothes by Anna Maria Clement & Brian R Clement- Co-Directors of The Hippocrates Health Institute

*synthetic fibers are made out of petrochemicals & were developed in the early 1900s during the Industrial Revolution - when the textile industry was mechanized so that mass production of clothing was possible & profitable

*8000 chemicals are employed to transform raw materials into clothes (including formaldehyde, brominared flame retardants, and perforated chemicals like teflon to name a few)

*These petrochemical fibers restrict & suffocate the skin - making it unable to breathe properly so it can release toxins

*our skin is the bodies most sensitive and eliminating organ ; we roughly release a pound of toxins everyday through our skin- assuming it’s allowed to ventilate properly

*If we are not able to release these toxins they become stored in our body fat and organs

*Babies who place everything in their mouth often chew & suck on fabric - they then absorb these chemicals & their natural detoxification systems aren’t fully developed enough to quickly eliminate fabric chemicals

*On top of the fibers made of petrochemicals they are then dyed with synthetic dyes which are also made of harmful chemicals

*Natural dyes have little to no harm and some are actually medicinal and can support your body in various ways (look up ayurvastra to learn more)

*Chemical clothing affects the entire planet: from toxic production methods, chemicals employed in cleaning, to clothing disposal practices in which these clothes are non-biodegradable and continue to harm the environment long after the users have ceased to exist

*About half of the worlds wastewater problems are linked to the production of textile goods

*The dangerous chemicals used to produce them are considered toxic by manufacturers and public health institutions yet clothing produced with these chemicals are treated as safe for use on human skin

*Now let’s look at natural fibers; they are made of plants, are actually nourishing to your body & are breathable and allow your body to do what it needs to regulate & release toxins

*Natural fibers energy production comes from the sun, a renewable resource where as energy used to produce synthetic clothing mostly comes from fossil fuels which generate environmental pollutants

*Looking at if from a frequency perspective - (dr.Heidi Yellen’s study) we are basically measuring plants vs chemicals

*At Sown Of The Earth I’m not only providing handmade 100% organic, natural fiber garments that are plant dyed but I’m also super passionate about learning and educating on textiles so we can be informed and made aware of what we are investing in

* This is my mission: to educate and make people aware of how we become our clothing, how it impacts us and the earth and what we can do to make change + educate on how you can make and dye your own clothing // how to look for natural fiber clothing + provide handmade high quality clothing available for purchase.

Modest devotional wear that nourishes body, soul, & earth.

Just as we have become more aware collectively on what we put in our bodies, so too it is equally as important as to what we put on our bodies
