I use all natural plant-dyes to dye all clothing. An ancient way of dyeing clothing that faded out around the mid 19th century when synthetic dyes were created. It is my passion to keep this ancient practice alive & to provide all with clothing that is nourishing to ones body, spirit & the earth.
I also use a style called shibori, which is a Japanese textile art that dates back to at least the 8th century. This technique is know for creating beautiful patterns by binding, twisting, folding, or compressing fabric before dyeing it. The word "shibori" comes from the Japanese verb "shiboru," which means "to wring, squeeze, or press," which describes how the fabric is manipulated to create resist patterns.
I work from my home in Minneapolis Minnesota. I was born & raised in Rochester Minnesota, yet found myself living elsewhere & traveling all over the world after college for many years. I returned here towards the end of 2023 & have fallen in love with my roots & being close to family.
I accept unworn, unwashed items as returns for up to 30 days. I do not accept exchanges for custom orders. There are full return instructions on your order confirmation email. If you have any additional questions about returning your garment please send me an email at Orders@sownoftheearth.com
What are the washing instructions?
Proper care of your naturally dyed garment will help preserve its rich colors. Over time, the hues may shift & soften, reflecting the living qualities of the plants used in the dyeing process. I encourage you to embrace these shifts as part of the garments unique story and as a reminder of the beauty in transformation we all experience.
1. Gentle Washing
- Turn inside out & Hand wash with cold water to preserve the natural dyes and prevent fading.
- Use a pH-neutral, eco-friendly, natural detergent to maintain the fabric’s integrity and color.
- Please do not wring linen to remove water! Instead, push fabric against the side of the washing bucket, roll in a towel, or put in the washer for a spin cycle to remove excess moisture.
2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
- Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and stain removers, as they can alter or damage the natural dye.
- To remove persistent stains, gently rub with soap and water before washing.
3. Air Dry
- Air drying is best to maintain the fabric’s texture and avoid heat damage.
- Hang or lay flat in a shaded area out of direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time.
4. Ironing
- It is best to iron on a low-medium heat setting while the fabric is slightly damp.
- Steam ironing works great with linen!
- Turn fabric inside out when ironing.
- keep the iron moving & do not hold in one place for too long.
5. Storing
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and ensure the longevity of your linen garment.
The 100% organic linen is sourced from Siulas, one of the oldest linen factories in Europe, founded in 1928. Siulas carries European Flax, premium linen fiber, and is OEKO TEX standard 100 certified organic. Europe is found to be one of the best countries for growing flax due to the unique qualities of the region including their soil and cool climates. Additionally linen production is deeply rooted in this area, contributing to the producer’s knowledge of the craft over thousands of years.
Flax stalks are spread out evenly across a grassy field, where the combination of air, sun and dew causes fermentation, which in turn causes there to not be a need for any pesticides to keep critters away. Leading to a sustainable high quality organic fabric.
