Why Linen?
When I found out that there were studies done on the energetics of fabrics, & that linen measured at 5000 hz, one of the highest frequency fabrics, meaning it gives healing energy to the body when worn, I decided I wanted Sown Of The Earth to be completely made of 100% organic linen.
It is my passion to use fabrics that not only nourish your physical & energetic being, but also are nourishing & sustainable for the earth.
Plus, linen has a ton of benefits, read more below..
- Linen is thermo-regulating
- Meaning it is comfortable to use in all seasons. It keeps you warm in the winter & cool in the summer. The heat conductivity of Linen is 5 times as high as that of wool and 19 times as that of silk. In hot weather, those dressed in Linen clothes are found to show the skin temperature 3-4 degrees below those wearing silk and cotton.
- According to some studies a person wearing linen clothes perspires 1.5 times less than when dressed in cotton clothes and twice less than when dressed in viscose clothes
- Meanwhile in cold weather linen is an ideal warmth keeper.
- Due to its anti-static characteristics, linen is more resistant to stain & dust & rejects dirt.
- Flax fabric acts as a filter, protecting the skin against chemical products, dust and other aggressions; linen clothes help soothe several skin conditions - from common rash to chronic eczemas.
- Linen reduces gamma radiation and protects the human organism against solar radiation.
- Linen is renowned for its durability and long life. The tensile strength of linen thread is twice as high as that of cotton and three times that of wool. Thus linen clothes only get better with age. Linen that’s been well cared for can last for up to three decades.
- Linen becomes softer and more pliable the more it is worn & washed.
- Flax respects the environment and preserves the land. Flax plants trap massive amounts of CO2, one hectare of flax retains 3.7 tons of CO2 every year; that's equivalent to the emissions from the average car if you drove it for nearly 6 days without stopping.
- Linen has an outstanding moisture absorbance. It can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in moisture before it feels damp and easily releases moisture to the air to remain cool and dry to the touch. It absorbs moisture without holding bacteria.
- Linen is suitable for allergy sufferers being non-allergenic and anti-bacterial, which makes the best microclimate for skin.
- Linen is biodegradable & grows without synthetic aids, making it a renewable & organic fabric.
- Linen is made of Flax cells which are highly compatible with human cells, producing a benevolent effect on the human organism.
- Linen has a smooth mat surface and feels pleasant to the touch.
- Linen is believed to reduce fatigue and lift spirits.
- Linen may reduce fever by regulating air ventilation.
- Flax remains colorfast and launders beautifully, but it’s good to remember, that under the direct sunlight items made from linen might change color slightly. Due to being naturally dyed, these items may fade with time & I see that as a beautiful characteristic, allowing space for change along with us.
- Linen tends to wrinkle & this is often considered part of linen’s particular charm, steam ironing works well if you want to rid the wrinkles.
- Silica present in the flax fiber protects linen against rotting - the mummies of Egyptian Pharaohs preserved to this day are wrapped in the finest linen cloth.
